The 63rd running of the Irish Derby was held on Wednesday 27th June 1928 over 1 mile 4 furlongs of The Curragh. Subscriptions were 65 sovereigns with a pot of 5250 sovereigns, 700 sovereigns to the second and 200 sovereigns to the third. The winner was owned by Sir Charles Hyde, bred in Ireland by Charles T Wallis, trained by Norman Scobie and ridden by Freddie Fox. The winner won by a neck in 2 minutes 46 seconds, with 4 lengths between second and third. |

JOCKEY PROFILE
Frederick Sidney Fox, universally known as Freddie, was born at Berrington in Shropshire in 1888. Freddie became a multiple Classic winning jockey, although his career took a while to get going. He became an apprentice in 1906 aged 18, but it was not until 1930 that he won the Flat Jockey Championship, mainly because of the dominance of Gordon Richards. In 1928 he won the Irish Derby on Baytown (SR 1980). He also rode 6 English Classic winners, most famous of them being the 1935 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby winner Bahram (SR 2110). Amongst his other successes were th 1911 1000 Guineas winner Atmah (SR 1877), the 1930 2000 Guineas winner Diolite (SR 1937), the 1931 Epsom Derby winner Cameronian (SR 2032) and the 1932 St Leger winner Firdaussi (SR 1889). He lived at Wantage and was so famous that he was referred to as ‘The Mayor of Wantage’ He died in a road accident on 12th December 1945 at Frilford near Abingdon aged 57. |
